  • "This is a novel that, in its brevity, manages not to let anything fall by the wayside, but to use the right words to drive it and inject the precisely correct doses of intrigue, emotion and literary spirit."  Antonio G. Iturbe, Qué Leer (referring to El juego del ahorcado)

Novel

A story of love and atonement on the Costa Brava.

While walking through the woods, Carlos falls fatefully off a cliff. Badly wounded, he heads for the first house he finds. Carla, the owner, calmly takes him in and dresses his wounds. When he awakes, many hours have passed. Successful, world-travelling architect Carlos is amazed by Carla as he gets to know her. She’s a painter who owns no phone, television or watch. The conversation between them flows naturally, and after two days they realise they’ve fallen in love. Disconcerted, Carlos decides to return to the hotel where he’s staying, taking with him a book titled The Face of Time. To his surprise, it accurately reproduces what’s just happened between him and Carla. Later, when they’re already living together, Carlos chances upon a door leading to a secret attic. There he finds objects belonging to Carla’s great-grandfather that will reveal details of her family saga and leave their lives forever entwined.

When David committed suicide, he and Sandra had not seen each other for years. But both knew that they were still bound by a dark secret, by something that happened one summer afternoon when the two were a couple of rebellious teenagers in love. Something tragic and irremediable that would mark their lives forever. With a direct and enveloping prose, and protagonists with an unforgettable strength and boldness, El juego del ahorcado brings us closer to a stormy start of a relationship in Spain during the 80s. This is the story of a love as wild as only adolescence can be, but also of suspense; a psychological drama and a bittersweet portrait of young people of all generations, who keep secrets, grow up behind adult’s back, and still keep the cruelty and innocence of children. An amazing novel where readers will get trapped in the threads of an immersive plot full of gray areas.
