To survive the tedious routine of his nursing home, Liberto picks up a pencil and begins writing his life story in a notebook, starting with that far-off day when he committed tothe libertarian ideal. That day, at the age of 16, he embarks on a journey of no return that leads him to join a miners’ revolution, the defeated side in a civil war, go into exile, and later flee from a French concentration camp. Liberto begins to understand that there is only space for his commitment far away from what we call civilisation. After passing through several South American countries, he ends up in the heart of the Amazon. There he seems to find his place in the world, among the natives and near the tree woman, a mysterious being who, despite her monstrous ugliness, holds a unique fascination for him. But even that remote, Edenic place is violently shaken by man’s thirst for destruction.
