Miquel de Palol: WHAT!

Novel, ANGLE EDITORIAL ( January 2018)

The protagonist, an abrasive, misanthropic individual, arrives at the conclusion that he must kill his idiot neighbour, Martín Pelegós. They haven’t known each other very long because our man just moved into this flat, where the previous tenant died under mysterious circumstances. Over drinks and shared sentimental adventures, a false friendship is formed in which the hatred increases as the murder plan progresses. The reader witnesses the ethical, aesthetic and metaphysical digressions involved in murder, and sees how it becomes the protagonist’s escape from the vulgarity (sometimes comical, sometimes tragicomic) present in every area of his life. A caustic, satirical novel about how we build our identity, Què! could only be penned by Miquel de Palol, one of the most original and admired writers on the Catalan literary scene.

“I just read a great novel: Què! by Miquel de Palol. We’re talking about one of the most brilliant writers in contemporary Catalan literature, and it’s also a riveting book..." Isabel-Clara Simó
