The only essay in which the abundance of deceptions and falsifications on its pages is a guarantee of its achievements and virtues.

When Epimenides stated that all Cretans were liars, he created a serious quandary for the philosophers of his time, and those of later centuries. Since Epimenides was Cretan, was he telling the truth or lying? This mendacious Cretan was not the first to theorise about lying...

Novel

An original, hilarious cross between Bartleby, the Scrivener, and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Paul Königsberg is the perfect employee: punctual, methodical and obsessive, and so attached to his work that he is incapable of even saying “hello” to the office colleague he has been in love with for years. Because of all this, he is ridiculed by his colleagues, as well as by his elderly mother, who telephones him regularly to remind him that he will never achieve anything in life.

Nobody would ever have imagined that the continuity of the male gender would depend on someone so poorly prepared to lead a normal existence. But when the earth is shaken by an invasion of extravagant aliens that leaves men on the verge of extinction, the ineffable Mr Königsberg, with his peculiar sense of duty, his obsessive compulsive disorder and his fondness for knitting, will prove himself to be a specimen particularly suited to survive the hecatomb.

“There is something of Schrödinger’s cat paradox in this novel. In it familiar things become strange and strange things become familiar. Do you really not want to know whether the cat is alive or dead?” Marta Sanz, author of Clavículas

"It tastes like a classic. Rengel has done it again. Fun, exciting, weird, apocalyptic and haunting." Berto Romero

This is the story of the greatest imaginer of all time. His own birth was an inexplicable event that went against the laws of nature, even though, today, there are few witnesses who can confirm the facts. Nikolaos Popoulos was born in Athens at the beginning of the 16th Century, under the ruling of the Ottoman Empire. He always wanted to be a writer, in order to leave at least some traces of all the things that his unlimited imagination had conceived. However, almost as if his life were cursed, he was repeatedly forced to become a man of action. Amid the golden cities and most remote places of a convulsive era, The Great Imaginer takes us back to the origins of fiction and shows us glimpses of some of the main icons of universal literature. Beyond the historical background, the main distinguishing features of this novel are the exuberance and the aesthetic touches of magical realism, which provide a platform to explore the European sources of the fantasy genre, of Gothic horror, and even science-fiction, while remaining within the formula of the adventure novel.

Mister Y. just has to finish one last job as a hitman but to do this he must overcome a huge obstacle: it’s the last day of his life. This professional assassin has been dying from the moment he was born. He has overcame so many diseases that you’d think he were a medical miracle. Currently working for an unknown client, his orders are to kill the slick Eduardo Blaisten before he dies from a stroke, gangrene or the worsening of Professional Spasm Syndrome. However, his bad luck frustrates all his attempts to kill his victim. The book establishes a magical connection between Mr. Y’s own struggles and the great physical, psychological and imaginary suffering which tortured Poe, Proust, Voltaire, Tolstoy, Molière, and all the other famous hypochondriacs in the history of literature.

Short stories and novellas

Non-fiction

Wherever there is life, there are lies.

Slick-suited politicians lie on the podium, ready to tell voters what they want to hear. Cheating lovers, swindling businessmen, double-crossing villains – all liars.  But nature lies too – the cheetah crouching in the tall grass waiting to pounce, its spots and straw-coloured fur blending in with its surroundings, the chameleon with its adaptable skin, the octopus hiding in its cave.

Juan Jacinto Muñoz-Rengel uncovers the slippery history of lies, some dark and elusive, others thunderous and dazzling.  From primeval forests to modern politics, he explores the uncomfortable truths of our white lies, fudged facts and blatant deceptions. For centuries, philosophers, writers and poets have grappled with the paradox of what’s fact and what’s fiction. So who can we really believe?  Our friends?  Our partners?  Our leaders?  Can we even trust ourselves?

Truly, this is the only book in which the abundance of lies on its pages is a sign of success. Or maybe it isn’t.  Who can really tell?

“I was dazzled and exhilarated by this playful philosophical tour-de-force.” Sydney Morning Herald

"Revelatory: we lie, yes, but often we do it to help each other. Muñoz-Rengel convincingly shows us that falseness 'is the clearest sign of intelligence', and should be appreciated as a tool for enabling people to understand reality." New Statesman

"The new book by Juan Jacinto Muñoz Rengel takes a journey through time in search of the origin of lies and their relationship with human nature.” El País

“A necessary, really timely book.” Toni Montesinos, La Razón

“I lie, therefore I am. An uncomfortable idea, but one that permits a dissection of the great stories that we have made up to survive in this world.” ABC

“It shows us that there are lies everywhere where there is life.” La Vanguardia

“For Muñoz Rengel everything is a lie, but not all lies are the same.” Público

“On reading Una historia de la mentira it becomes clear that fake news and hoaxes are not a modern invention.” Página Dos, La 2, RTVE

“There is no order of reality where lies do not prevail and Muñoz Rengel reviews them with a very sharp eye and critical spirit.” Juan Francisco Ferré

“A brilliant essay by a great novelist whose writing succeeds in hooking the reader.” El Ojo Crítico, Radio Nacional

“Rather than a historiographical text, it is an essay on the social and human nature of lies, a philosophical journey.” Anna Maria Iglesia, The Objective

“My choice for book of the year.” Pablo Bujalance, Grupo Joly

“This work is a challenge for those who read it. An essay that brilliantly dismantles and unmasks long assumed truths.” Emma Rodríguez, Lecturas Sumergidas

“Stimulating, thrilling and very eloquent.” Carlos Javier González Serrano, Radio Círculo Bellas Artes

Anthology / Selection
