Petra Delicado faces the toughest dilemma of her life.

Petra Delicado has to cope with earth-shattering events in her personal life, while at work she is trying to figure out who is responsible for the murder of a French cook stabbed to death inside a food truck. A tangle of fake passports and illegal dealings with the Barcelona underworld – with a French connection – that becomes increasingly complicated much to the astonishment of the inspector and her inseparable assistant Fermín Garzón. However, it is on returning home, at night and deadbeat after a day of investigation, that Petra finds herself dealing with an even more inexplicable mystery: her usually affectionate and attentive husband, Marcos, is going through the midlife crisis that strikes, without distinction of class or IQ, the male gender at some point in their lives. Without the inspector’s usually infallible intuition giving her any forewarning this time, the harmonious family life that she enjoys with Marcos and his three children is about to be blown to pieces forever.

“Rather than a pioneer, the great Alicia Giménez Bartlett is a teacher.” El País

“Right up to the very last page, a terrific novel. Rarely has the detective genre been used so well, which consists of much more than just telling crime stories.” Abc

“If there’s anyone who deserves the title of the great lady of Spanish noir, it’s Alicia Giménez Bartlett.” Vocento

“A captivating and highly addictive intrigue.” Zenda

“In a world whose contours have been blurred by the pandemic, this noir novel entertains us by revealing certain truths.” La Repubblica

“The complexity of the characters, their humanity. Reading Alicia Giménez Bartlett truly brings to mind Andrea Camilleri.” Sellerio

“In some cases, noir, instead of striking the chords of tension, becomes reassuring because there is a sense of familiarity with the protagonists.” Tutto Libri
