The best introduction to Ana María Matute’s highly personal world.

Throughout her career, Ana María Matute (Barcelona, 1925–2014) wrote a large number of short stories for weekly newspapers and magazines which, together with her major novels, constitute one of the most significant bodies of work in contemporary Spanish fiction. This selection brings together some of the finest short stories published in the volumes Los niños tontos, El tiempo, Historias de la Artámila, El arrepentido y otras narraciones and Algunos muchachos. This collection provides a faithful picture of the author’s journey in the field of short fiction and allows us to glimpse her fertile and utterly unique universe, which captures in an inimitable way the child’s rich perspective and the crucial, defining experience that shakes a child’s world, and in which the underprivileged take centre stage—those ramshackle lives condemned by history to marginalisation and oblivion.
