The graphic novel adaptation of a classic.
For the first time, a graphic novel adaptation of A Hora da Estrela, one of Clarice Lispector’s most iconic novels. Written in 1977, the year of her death, A Hora da Estrela explores the dull, hapless life of Macabéa, a semi-literate girl from the provinces who works as a typist in Rio de Janeiro. She becomes an object of obsession for a writer named Rodrigo, haunted by the self-doubts that come with writing itself and the impulse to write about such an ordinary person, so free of affectation and so easily forgotten. Or not, because as many readers already know, after finishing A Hora da Estrela, Macabéa becomes immortal thanks to the magic of Clarice Lispector. Her story was adapted for the screen in 1985 and Macabéa continues to create a buzz with this graphic adaptation by Leticia Wierzchowski and Line Lemos.
“Every page vibrates with feeling. It’s not enough to say that Lispector bends language or uses words in new ways. Plenty of modernists do that. No one else writes prose this rich.” Lily Meyer, NPR
