The author invokes the thought of the philosopher of Rotterdam to address the problems of the present. Unexcused Peace, The Choice of Barbarism, and the remaining essays published for the first time in this volume denounce the falsification of history and analyze the roots of the myth that leads to proclaiming an era like our own as radically new. They open a line of reflection on the political role assigned to the concepts of culture and civilization. The author approaches this from the conviction that what truly matters is resisting, at every turn, the justification of the intolerable—and that the crisis we suffer today was bound to be all the more devastating precisely because the 'intolerable was being justified.
