The definitive edition of the complete works of one of the foremost poets of the Spanish language.

This volume brings together the first eight books published by Juan Gelman (1930-2014) before he left Argentina at the age of 36.

Juan Gelman is undeniably one of the most cherished poets in Argentina and one of the most admired proponents of Latin American poetry in general. He was one of the great architects of the poetic renewal of the generation that inherited the legacy of Jorge Luis Borges and Pablo Neruda, and his contributions championed the language of the streets – with its own rhythms and meanings, strong doses of irony and a poetic perspective that resonated in the hearts of the common people. One of his most best-known books, Gotán, is proof of this: a title that reverses the syllables of “tango”, and Oxen Rage, included in this volume along with other titles as unclassifiable as Translations III: The Poems of Sidney West, in which he pretends to be the translator of a fictional American poet, and Relaciones (Relationships), which marked a turning point in Gelman’s literary career, a more reflective work in which he questions his role as a poet and the transcendence of poetry.
