This edition brings together about twenty odes in which Pablo Neruda pays homage to food and other elemental pleasures linked to art and the act of eating. The Chilean poet turns everyday life into poetry and celebrates nature and its multiple virtues, allowing us to delve into his Latin American identity and rethink the historical relationship between Spain and Latin America. The illustrations by Javier Zabala, National Illustration Award winner, accompany this unique collection of poems.
In Odes to Food and Other Elemental Pleasures, there is a tribute to America and a profound reflection on its conquest and colonization. This volume, also ideal for food and cooking enthusiasts, gathers some of the compositions written in his four books of odes between 1954 and 1959, in which Neruda praises the simple elements found on our table: from fruits and vegetables to seasonings, products like bread and wine, and even utensils like plates and spoons.
With a unique avant-garde and pictorial language, Javier Zabala manages to evoke the poet's universe in unconventional illustrations. His artwork, using a variety of colors and techniques such as watercolor, ink, acrylic paint, collage, and stamping, works with the nuances of the elements described by Neruda.
